Contempt for Morality

Bible prophecy warns as the Tribulation hour draws near, that the nations will become more wicked. I've been watching world events for nearly forty years, and I am amazed at how the moral standards have been declining at a relentless pace. Judge for yourself if the following passage, written nearly 2000 years, doesn't perfectly describe our generation:

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God" (2 Timothy 3:1-4).

We currently have a rash of political leaders generating headlines because of sexual misconduct. There is nothing new about politicians being unable to control their libidos-but what is new-is the level of contempt these men show for morality.

I'm sure most of you have heard about Anthony Weiner, the former congressman from New York who was forced to step down in 2011, after he sent an explicit sexual picture of himself by cell phone to admirers. He has now returned to politics as a candidate for mayor of New York City. He is also involved in a second scandal after it was revealed that he has continued sending sexually explicit photos and messages to various women.

One would think that sheer embarrassment would force Weiner to drop out of the race. Despite a flood of ridicule, mockery, and even scorn for his wife for being dumb enough to stand by him, he continues on like nothing has happened. Weiner has all the markings of a sociopath-someone who lacks the ability to feel guilt or shame.

It has quickly become clear to me that the media's only interest in this story is for its titillation value. They are like dogs wallowing in garbage. In researching this article, I've encountered nearly every sexual pun in the book. The question the press should be asking Weiner is this: "What type of revelation is there that could force you to leave the mayoral race?"

Evidence of how warped our society has become in its view of morality can be found in the woman that was Weiner's sexting partner. Sydney Leathers, a 23-year-old a college sophomore says she exchanged steamy online messages and phone calls with Weiner. She said he is responsible for his downfall. "I feel sick about it, I'm disgusted by him. He is not who I thought he was," said Leathers.

Someone should point out to her that she was Weiner's sexting partner. If Leathers is going to have any disgust it should also be for her own behavior. She seems to think that Weiner is the only responsible adult in the affair. The topper here is news that said Leathers is in negotiation to do a sex video with a Weiner stand in. Over the weekend, she was seen getting into the car of Vivid Video's porn honcho, Steve Hirsch. I guess anything goes as long as it involves a paycheck.

I see zero chance of Weiner winning the Democratic nomination. Right now, he is in fourth place. There is one thing Weiner may accomplish. By staying in the race, he is helping to set the bar at a new low point. Any future politician that suffers a moral lapse can say, "Well, at least I'm not an Anthony Weiner."

There once was a time when people would automatically view themselves unworthy of a certain political office because of what they did in their past. Alan Simpson, the former Senator from Wyoming, had banned himself from being a presidential candidate because of misdeeds from his youth.

When Simpson was in High School he and some friends committed arson on federal property. Federal authorities charged Simpson with destroying government property and Simpson pleaded guilty. He received two years of probation and was required to make restitution. Simpson described his past with contriteness, "The older you get, the more you realize...your own attitude is stupefying, and arrogant, and cocky, and a miserable way to live."

The reason why our world is so messed up is because instead of people like Alan Simpson, we have individuals with the values of Anthony Weiner running things.

"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some [not all] shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron" (1 Timothy 4:1-2).
