M-CLASS FLARE, EARTH-DIRECTED CME

M-CLASS FLARE, EARTH-DIRECTED CME
October 13th began with an explosion on the sun. At 00:43 UT, sunspot AR1865 erupted, producing an M1-class solar flare and an Earth-directed CME.

CME IMPACT, GEOMAGNETIC STORM
An interplanetary shock wave, possibly the leading edge of a CME, hit Earth's magnetic field on October 8th at approximately 2015 UT (1:15 pm PDT). The impact sparked a G1-class geomagnetic storm (in progress) and bright auroras around the Arctic Circle.

M-CLASS SOLAR FLARE
Solar activity is picking up. New sunspot AR1865 erupted this morning (Oct. 9th at 01:48 UT), producing the strongest solar flare in nearly two months. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the M2.8-class eruption.

RADIO-ACTIVE SUN
"The Sun has been generating Type III solar radio bursts and they appear to be intensifying," reports amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft of New Mexico.

Weird Shift of Earth's Magnetic Field Explained
Earth's magnetic field shields the planet from charged particles streaming from the sun, keeping it from becoming a barren, Mars-like rock. For more than 300 years, scientists have recorded a westward-drifting feature in the field that models have been unable to explain.

Earthquake in Greece: A 6.4 magnitude quake shakes Crete
Earthquake in Greece: A major quake shook Greece but caused little damage and no serious injuries were reported. The magnitude 6.4 earthquake Saturday was centered off the coast of the island of Crete.

Strong quake strikes near Crete, minor damage reported
According to the US Geological Survey the quake had a 6.4 magnitude, while the Athens Observatory gave it a magnitude of 6.2. The epicentre was some 60 kilometres off the city of Hania in western Crete, the state-run Athens News Agency said.

Earthquake in Thessaloniki Hits 4.4 on the Richter Scale
According to the Athens Institute of Geodynamics, the earthquake occurred at 8.15 in the morning, 40 km east of Thessaloniki and its focal depth was 10 km. It is not yet known whether there are damages resulting from the earthquake.

Coastal storm to impact the mid-Atlantic (Wind, Beach Erosion, High Tides, Heavy Rain, Raw)
A couple of things really strike me as significant about this system. One, this storm will be “embedded” underneath an upper ridge, and with little flow around the ridge, precipitation will likely be slow to move out.

India is preparing for a massive cyclone, which is sweeping through the Bay of Bengal towards the country's east coast. Cyclone Phailin, categorised as "very severe" by weather forecasters, is expected to hit Orissa and Andhra Pradesh states on Saturday. The Meteorological Department has predicted winds of 205-215km (127-134 miles) at the time of landfall.

South Dakota blizzard kills, buries cows; shutdown leaves ranchers in the cold
Like in a scene from an apocalyptic parable, dark carcasses of cows and steers lie motionless in silent clusters across swaths of South Dakota. An early blizzard caught ranchers off guard this week in the state, killing as many as 20,000 head of cattle, a state official says. But ranchers say they are the real victims. The storm left many of them in ruins, and now Washington is leaving them out in the cold.

Tornado damage in Eads, Colorado
A tornado hit the southeast Colorado community of Eads Thursday evening, emergency officials in Kiowa County said. Tornado hit about 6:30 p.m. and damaged two houses. Tornado also knocked down power to the communities of Brandon, Sheridan Lake and Towner, The Denver Channel reported.

Cyclone Phailin: Mass evacuations in eastern India
More than 400,000 people in India have been evacuated as a massive cyclone sweeps through the Bay of Bengal towards the east coast. Cyclone Phailin, categorised as "very severe" by weather forecasters, is expected to hit Orissa and Andhra Pradesh states on Saturday evening. The Meteorological Department has predicted the storm will bring winds up to 220 km/h (136mph).

Storm, Floods Kill 33 in Philippines as Typhoon Wipha Expected
At least 33 people were killed in the Philippines in the past week as days of heavy rains followed by a typhoon caused flooding and landslides while a new tropical storm is expected tomorrow. At least 13 died after Typhoon Nari slammed into the provinces north of the capital yesterday, uprooting trees, causing power outages and making some roads impassable, according to the disaster monitoring agency’s report on its website. Twenty were killed in the five days to Oct. 8 in parts of Visayas and Mindanao islands due to floods and landslides, a separate report said.

Cyclone in India weakens after causing damage
An immense, powerful cyclone that lashed the Indian coast, forcing 500,000 people to evacuate and causing widespread damage, weakened Sunday after making landfall. Five people died in the rains that fell ahead of the storm, most killed by falling branches, Indian media reported, but the situation on the ground in many areas was still unclear after Cyclone Phailin slammed into the coast Saturday evening in Orissa state.
