Tony Rand, a North Carolina Cumberland County Democrat and senate majority leader, ordered Bibles, hymnals and a cross to be removed from the legislative building last week, saying that other lawmakers have complained about the chapel's Christian emphasis in a public building used by those of all faiths. Senate Leader Marc Basnight, another Democrat, reversed the ruling and ordered the items restored. The move for restoration came after complaints by some Republicans and a reporter's inquiry.
