Church Calls Pastors Survival a Miracle

February 2, 2005

They're singing a song of praise, but this Wednesday night there's something extra to be thankful for.

Fort Payne Church of God's head pastor, Gary Smith, was shot in the face Saturday morning. Police say Smith was trying to council Robert Harrison and went to Harrison's home. That's when he was shot and he survived.

Like his church, Smith says he has no ill will toward Harrison. As to his surviving a gun shot wound to the face, his congregation says it's simply a miracle.

'Everybody at first was generally devastated, but then we found out how he was and how God had protected him through it all,' Joey Cox, the church's youth pastor, said.

'If you think somebody's been shot in the face, to be back this quick it's nothing but miraculous,' Charles Belvins, a church member said.

It will be at least three weeks before pastor Smith will be healthy enough to go back to church. As for Robert Harrison, he's being charged with assault.
