A cluster of active sunspots has just rotated off the Earthside of the sun. The remaining sunspots facing Earth are quiet, prompting NOAA forecasters to downgrade the chance of geoeffective flares.  

5.3-magnitude earthquake rattles northeastern China
A 5.3-magnitude earthquake rattled Songyuan in northeastern China Friday, but China's state-run media reported no serious injuries or deaths initially.

Two lava flows are active on the upper slopes of the volcano at the moment, to the Taniluya (south) and Ceniza canyon (SE). The effusive activity started on 11 Nov and increased on 18 November, reaching a length of 600 m.

For the first time ever, researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute, among others, have observed an unusually powerful gamma-ray burst in the relatively nearby universe -- a monster gamma-ray burst. The results are published in the scientific journal, Science.  

Philippine typhoon toll rises to record 5,209: official
The death toll from super typhoon Haiyan, which slammed across the central Philippines two weeks ago, has risen to more than 5,200, the National Disaster Agency said on Friday, the most deadly natural disaster ever to hit the country.
